Director's Statement

How come there are so few independent features made in Taiwan?

That’s the question my producer Iris Lai and I asked after we finished working on our previous two documentaries on innovation “Design & Thinking,” and “Maker.” Both films had been shown in multiple countries around the world, including screenings at Google, Twitter, Harvard, and numerous film festivals. We used crowdfunding and social media paired with self-distribution, expanding the possibilities of how documentaries are funded and produced in Taiwan but distributed internationally.

As we turned our lens back to our own country and searched for the next subject matter to explore, we asked ourselves what kind of film did we want to see? What kind of film could only be made in Taiwan? We looked at our peers, 20-30 somethings living in Taipei now. This new generation is financially abundant and now searching for more self-actualization and meaning than our parents, who often made decisions based on finance rather than philosophy. They are the ones that open the numerous cafes and indie boutiques in Taipei, a new, young hip generation that inspired Monocle Magazine to come to Taipei to find these hidden gems rather than the usual Taiwanese impression of food and Temples.

We also wanted to tell the story in an interesting way. Strangely, there’s rarely any science fiction films made in Taiwan. Having studied filmmaking in San Francisco, I had the opportunity to experience indie filmmaking and startup culture first hand. I loved how people could make deeply personal films in all genres under limited resources.

After a year of researching numerous low-budget indies and researching storytelling under constraints, we set out to write and produce our first feature narrative film. “Paradoxical” was born under this fusion of perspectives and a diverse cultural background. It’s a sci-fi drama about people who have unique jobs and whose lives and perspective on time are challenged because of a time travel related incident that connects them unknowingly.

In the end, it’s not time travel that’s paradoxical, rather life itself is paradoxical.

The film was entirely self-financed, not an economical choice but more importantly because we believe in an unadulterated vision and independent spirit. It is one of the rare if not only sci-fi film to come out of Taiwan in the past few years, incorporating a fusion of culture and perspectives, wrapped into a story that has an unexpected ending and explores a new perspective towards life. We feel very lucky to have worked on this film and are extremely proud of the outcome. We hope you enjoy it as well, and find it as powerful and thought-provoking as we did.

PRODUCTION TEAM

Muris is a Taipei-based creative studio focused on filmmaking in the innovation sector, founded by Mu-Ming Tsai and Iris Lai in San Francisco. We are the team behind three award-winning documentaries: Design & Thinking (2012), Maker (2014), and Hanzi (2017). Three films had been shown in multiple countries around the world, including screenings at Google, Twitter, Harvard, and numerous film festivals like CPH:DOX, Belfast, Sidewalk and Balinale. We used crowdfunding platform Kickstarter and social media paired with self-distribution, expanding the possibilities of how documentaries are funded and produced in Taiwan but distributed internationally.

Having worked and lived in San Francisco, we had the opportunity to experience indie filmmaking and startup culture first hand, and loved how people could make deeply personal films in all genres under limited resources. With that independent spirit in mind, we set out to write and produce our first feature narrative film - Paradoxical (2018).
